use distance check and velocimetry simultaneously?

Posted by Raleigh Martin at September 02. 2009

I'd like to simultaneously use the Vectrino as a bottom sounder (using the distance check) and get velocimetry measurements (through the normal "data collection") in the Vectrino Plus software.  However, when I do the standard data collection, there is no option to get distance measurements.  Conversely, when I'm in distance check mode, I can't get velocimetry measurements.  Is it possible to log both of these things simulateneously?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Raleigh,

I'm hoping someone from NortekAS will wander in and answer this a little more technically for you, but  you can not log both the distance check and velocity at the same time for the Vectrino or Vector. I think at one point this might have been a potential feature, but I think there are internal processing limitations that keep it from occurring.

If you have a Vector running Firmware V1.20 or higher and don't mind the larger size head, you could do very short bursts and the Vector will report the distance to the boundary at the start of each burst.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the advice.  Do you know where I could find instructions for how to do short bursts as you mentioned using the Vectrino+ software?  Or is this something that requires more a more advanced method of configuration?

Thanks,
Raleigh

Hi Raleigh,

Unfortunately, only the Vector is capable of burst measurements among the Nortek acoustic velocimeters. This I think has to do with it sharing the internal electronics of the Paradopp family (Aquadopp, HR Profiler, Vector) and it's primary purpose as a field instrument.

The Vectrino is intended primarily as a laboratory instrument and doesn't have a burst sampling capability.
