Compass update rate and internal sampling rate

Posted by Oyvindur at January 28. 2009

Dear people at Nortek,

I was just wondering about the compass update rate  for a deployment where I have a profile interval at 10mins and average over 1 min.

The location has strong currents (50cm/s)and I fear, from previous experience, "wobbling" of the instrument due to effects like von Karmans vortex street. The instrument is heading upwards.

I see that the default compass update rate says every 600s=10mins.

If I, due to my fear of the wobbling scenario, would like to have the compass updated every second instead, will the compass then update every second during those 10 minutes, or only during the averaging over 1 min?

Comments are highly appreciated.

I am dealing with a 400 kHz ADCP-profiler, what is the internal sampling rate for this instrument?

Best Regards

Oyvindur

Dear Oyvindur

Using a compass update rate of 1 s means that the velocity data is converted to ENU with a fresh compass reading every 1 s during the 1-minute averaging interval. If you worry about wobbling, this would be the recommended setting.
The internal ping rate for the 400 kHz profiler is 3 Hz
