current analysis

Posted by ains at November 20. 2006
Hi,
I am a student that has been given the task to analize the data produced by the ADCP. The instrument was deployed on a tidal reef flat with the settings of; interval (360sec.), Average Interval (60 sec.),# cells (32), cell size (25cm), blank (0.1m) set in ENU mode.
I now have that data and I am trying processes it within storm. I need to find the currents at the bed over 2 tidal cycles, the average water currents through the water column at select times through the tidal cycle and the wave descriptors. I have read all the help files, been exploring your forum and web site, but I am stilling struggling with analysis.

Please can you put in me in the right direction to getting started with the processing? Also, once the data is analyzed, for presentation of the results does the file need to be exported as an ascii or some other file??

Hi Ains,

There are two ways that you can view currents at selected depths in the Storm (or Surge) software.

The first is to use the buttons at the top of the software.  You will see some buttons similar to that used in a media player;  these allow you to step through the data.  Just to the right of these buttons are two buttons; one showing a vertical line and one showing a horizontal line.  These allow you to view a vertical profile or a level over time.  This is done by activating the function (clicking the button) and then moving the curser into the contour plot and clicking in here to specify where you want to see a profile or a vertical level over time.

You can add in as many as you want by continuing to click in the contour plot.  You can remove the "slices" by clicking exactly where one exists already (sometimes tricky).  You can turn off the function by again clicking on the button (beside media play) that turned on the function.

Next, you can view different types of data by using the buttons on the side of the software.  The buttons to the right switch the view (direction, speed, current-along direction, acoustic amplitude) for the contour plot AND the profile plots.

The buttons on the left allow you to look at the same information, but now it is just for the horizontal slices in the contour plot (one level over time).  Adding or removing the plotted data is toggled with the button.

I think the best way to get a feel of how to do this is simply to play around a little and soon enough you will get the feel of how to look at your data. <img src=" />;)'>

There is a second method of viewing a horizontal slice of data.  This is to just use the the buttons on the left, which lie just under the amplitude buttons.  Here you click the button for the data you want to view (current, direction, etc.) and it prompts you for which level you want to plot.  These buttons are less obvious since they are sandwiched between the sensor data and the other current buttons mentioned earlier.

Other things that may be interesing to you is the zoom function.  This is simply used by creating a box in the data window.  Again, just play around.

If you need to present the plots that you have created in a report, then you may export the plots in one of several standard data formats.  This is done by right-clicking in the plot window and chosing the export function.

good luck,
Torstein

Hi Torstein,

Can you explain why the current data collected using an AWAC 600kHz has shown repetitive of data? Please view the attached pdf file for details.

Thanks.

Hi, I´m just a new user of a 1MHZ Aquadop Profiler. I need to know the meaning of the low signal SNR threshold in the processing data menu: is it the recommended minimum amplitude? Would be the same a SNR threshold of 3 db (the default value) and a amplitude of 30 counts?

Thanks

Nicholas

Hi Nicholas, maybe this could be a place to start:
